Steiff Animals

In 1903, Margarete Steiff, a disabled German seamstress, added a soft plush bear to the Steiff catalogue and quickly sold 3,000 to America.  Between 1903 and the First World War Steiff sold literally millions of bears, with their trademark button in the left ear, to the United States, Germany and Britain.

Today, when you buy a Steiff animal, you are buying from a company with over 100 years of history. No other company in existence today has been making animals for that long or that have the Steiff quality.

Steiff has perfected the art of realistic animals, soft and cuddly toys, and elegant and graceful lines. Steiff animals can be twisted and turned, sat on, thrown around, squashed, and anything else you can think of, and they still retain their shape, their seams don't rip apart, and their eyes don't fall out. New materials even allow for mild washings--a saving grace from little, happy, sticky fingers!

When you buy a Steiff animal today, and as the years go by and the piece remains in excellent condition. and you have a wonderful keepsake and heirloom that you'll treasure for a lifetime. Whether the animal is a realistic panther, a traditional teddy, or a cute and cuddly kitten, it will provide years and years of enjoyment and happy memories!  We're proud to be selected as Steiff retailers in Florida.  Please visit and see our wonderful collection!

Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my--all original Steiffs looking for a new home!

Steiff Fact:  Margarete Steiff contracted polio at 1 year old in 1849 and spent the rest of her life confined to a wheelchair--but despite her disabilities--she was highly successful! Her Motto? "The best is just good enough for our children!"

Yes, you can actually ride this big Steiff elephant--that is, if you're a little person!

Steiff Fact:  Steiff "Button in Ear" is one of the oldest and best-known trademarks.

Here is a pic of the button trademark dating to 1897. Franz Steiff, Margarete's nephew and Steiff's chief technician, invented the "Button in Ear" in 1904.

Cat, dogs, sheep, beavers, rabbits---A Steiff Noah's Ark full!

Steiff Fact:  In 1880 Ms. Steiff created the first Steiff animal - an elephant made of felt, that was intended for use as a pincushion. The elephant was the first soft-filled fabric toy animal and soon became very popular with children, who enjoyed playing with it. Now, there's an idea...

Here's a list of record antique Steiff prices. In 2000, an antique bear sold at Christie's for 300,000 DM. (That's about $200,000 US dollars!)

History of Dept. 56

One Christmas evening, a group of friends set off to enjoy a dinner of celebration at a small country inn nestled in a quiet river town. As they rounded a bend in the road, they saw the small, old-fashioned village decorated for the holidays. The lights, like fairies, glowed and sparkled amid the freshly fallen snow.

All evening, the conversation was full of Christmas memories and the visions the tiny town had evoked. Amidst the jovial banter and magical memories, the idea for a lighted Christmas village was born.

That spark of an idea became a reality when, in 1976, Department 56 introduced a series of six hand-painted, ceramic buildings. Department 56 began as part of Bachman's, a premiere retail florist in Minneapolis. Bachman's used a numbering system to identify each of its departments. The number assigned to wholesale gift imports division was, you guessed it, 56.
